Giving Thanks, Part 2

My last post was missing images of a beautiful family who came and modeled for a group of us at my recent Pobke Magic – Brisbane workshop… They were loving, fun, energetic and, well, ENERGETIC. :) Especially the two lil’ gals who loved running up and down the alley way, making a pregnant Pobke chase them, and jumping in and out of puddles. :) More than anything, I adore happy children and happy families, and so it was with such great joy to meet Tam and Dave and their two little lovelies. Thank you for taking the time to come out and model for us, beautiful, happy, energetic family! :) xoxox

You know when you feel so overwhelmed with things that the only thing you logically think to do is NOT think of all the things you have to do? Yes, well, that’s kinda how I’ve been feeling this past month. I have had the pleasure of meeting so many new families and seeing so many repeat clients (thank you lovely weather!!), yet the blog had been neglected for so long that I just couldn’t bear the thought of logging in and facing the truth.

Until now that is. It’s Monday morning. The weather is GLORIOUS outside. And I think I’m finally ready to start blogging with some regularity again. Finally. It’s like a new leaf has turned over, and my brain and skin and eyes and every other sense in my body is grateful for the sun and the beautiful spring weather we’ve been experiencing here in Canberra.

Meet Kirsty and Jason and their adorable daughter E. If they don’t bring a smile to your face on this lovely morning, I don’t know what will. :) Hope you’re all enjoying the wonderful outdoors as well… I fully plan on taking myself outside for a nice long hike this afternoon, to celebrate the non-blog-draught and perfect spring weather!

Bree + Anton (Canberra Family Photographer)

Bree and Anton are high school sweethearts. They’re smart. They’re totally in love. They have a beautiful family. They’re building their house (it’s their third, by the way). AND they each run their own business. I know, right? How can so much luck and talent and and and go to one couple? So not fair.

But after having spent a full day with them and their adorable two sons, I realised that it’s not just luck and talent – they work incredibly hard. They’re giving people. They teach their sons patience and kindness. They never expect anything from anyone. They just live and treat others as they want to be treated. So it makes sense that the universe rewards them in leaps and bounds. The most precious thing about this family, however, is how just being in their presence allows you to see the world differently. You see, a few personal things happened to me while I was in Adelaide to photograph them. Things that, in other circumstances, may have made me quite upset and sensitive and angry with the world. But seeing the way Bree and Anton live their life and treat others made me realise so much about the human condition: we’re resilient. And kind meets kind; lovely meets lovely. Always. :)

So Bree + Anton, thank you so much for letting me spend time with you and your beautiful family, and for reminding me to work hard, play hard, and love hard. :) Big hugs to you and your beautiful boys. xoxo

[Yes, we slept at a fire station. And then we went and picked strawberries. And then we went to have a picnic in the Adelaide hills, all styled beautifully by Emily from White Room Events. It was an AWESOME day!!]

[And no, Bree and Anton don't have a third child; the cutie pie is the daughter of Bree's bestie, who both joined us for the strawberry picking! :)]

The Bartholomews (Canberra Family Photographer)

Not any single family is the same. The dynamics may appear the same, and the features of the family may be the same, but connections within families are always so very different. So I was fully prepared in going into this Life Story session with the expectation that it would ultimately be special and unique to the Bartholomews. And it was.

I arrived in the evening, slept in their cosy living room, and woke up with my camera next to my pillow. Like other Life Story sessions, this is my M.O.: sleep over; wake up with camera in hand; absorb family into soul. Not only is this the best way to start a session, but it ensures that the family have no time to really “get ready” for their portrait shoot. Because “portrait shoot” this is not. It’s a documentary shoot. A glimpse into the life story of a family so in love with one another.

As you’ll see in the photos below, the Bartholomews are clearly in love. They love each other. They love their great dane, Earnest. They love life and live it. It’s insane how much love you can feel blossoming inside you as you witness theirs. That, in my opinion, is the mark of a truly wonderfully connected family: the ability to spread positivity and radiate love to people without even realising it.

Andrew + Hailey: thank you so much. Words can’t express the sheer joy I felt being around you, and the admiration I have for both of you as parents and as a couple. You’re everything I want to be and more. And your two very talented, very beautiful, very precious girls are a testament to all of this. Thank you for giving me the honour of spending a day with you to capture just a page in the Book of Bartholomew. :) Love you all. xoxo

Friday! (Canberra Family Photographer)

It’s Friday. Oh my. A beautiful wedding tomorrow. A Valentine’s Day celebration with my sweetheart on Sunday and Monday (ooh two whole days!). And then WPPI. Gulp.

The plane ride from Sydney – Los Angeles is something I’ve done quite regularly, given that my family all live in the States. Before every trip, I very anally go through the airline’s in-flight entertainment schedule. (Yes, nerd alert. Nerd alert.) I like to stay awake the whole time on this leg of the journey, so planning movies is a must. (Returning from LA, however, is the opposite. No movies; must sleep. I’ve got it down to a T!)

Because I’m a big film lover, I have to watch EVERYTHING. You name it, the Pobke’s have more than likely seen it. It’s sad, really. But movies are our hobbies! We loves it we does! :) So for this particular journey, I’m watching:

EEEEEK! Truth be told, I don’t know if I’m more excited about the movies or WPPI!! :) Either way, I can’t believe Vegas is coming up so quickly. Will I remember to take my passport? I hope so! :)

Seven Days (Canberra Children’s Photographer)

I’ve got seven days before I head to Las Vegas. Seven. In those seven days, I have two Mentor Sessions, a commercial gig, a meeting with my accountant (gulp), and a wedding to photograph. Ordinarily I’d be a stress ball but lucky for me, time management is on my side. (Oh, and Google Calendar, with colour-differentiated tasks + reminders!) It’s going to be a busy seven days, but I think it’s necessary as I’ll be doing a whole lot of ~~partying~~ learning in Vegas for the following two weeks. :)

I’ll be posting a few more times this week, but then it’ll be all quiet on the Pobke Blog until March! (That is, unless I don’t blog from Vegas. But knowing me, I’ll probably be blogging something, even if it’s a boring ‘something’.) And should you feel so inclined to see the goings-ons in the life of Pobke, please feel free to find me on Twitter or on Pobke Project 365 (where I will most certainly be posting every day… If not multiple times a day!)

Engagement shoots make me happy. In fact, most shoots make me happy, but engagement shoots in particular make me giddy and giggly and happy and twirly. I think it’s because Clinton and I have such a beautiful engagement memory, and I can’t help but reflect on our own love story whenever I go to shoot another happy couple! Ours happened on New Year’s Eve’s eve in 2006, on a boat merrily chugging along in the Sydney Harbour. Clinton bought me a dress. We enjoyed a three course meal. And between mains and dessert, on the deck of a chartered ferry, he asked me to be his wife. It was particularly windy that evening, so when he pulled out the three stone eternity ring out of his pocket, I nearly died of fright thinking it would blow away into the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

It did not. It made its way safely onto my finger to which it still happily lives atop our simple wedding band. :)

So on my way to every engagement shoot, I always relive this moment. Wind in my hair. Thoughts of a lifetime with my soulmate. Dancing and singing in the Sydney Harbour. How can I not love my job? :)

El (Mentor Sessions with Christine)

It was pouring rain and I was operating on auto-pilot. I had just shot a 12 hour wedding (plus six hour roundtrip commute!) the previous night, so you can imagine how spritely I was (not really) the morning I was scheduled for my mentor session with El. However, my woes were nothing compared to hers… she and her family of five drove 16 hours from southeast Queensland. Um, she wins.

But the lovely way the day unfolded says a lot about El and her ability to ooze that warmth I was so drawn to. We chatted like lifelong friends who hadn’t seen each other in 20 years. Life, marriage, histories, funny things her children say. You know, the usual things discussed at a Mentor Session with Christine! :) Oh, and a bit of photography. :) The horribly rainy weather forced us to cancel with our model family we were going to photograph, and El was so open to anything + everything: “Whatever you wanna talk about, Christine!” she said. “Um… No. Whatever YOU want to discuss, El!” said I. So we chatted the day away, discussed business ideas, editing, organising, blogging, you-name-it. And when her family came to pick her up at the end of the day, I did a quick, six minute impromptu shoot with them (the sun shined for about three minutes!).

So El, thank you my new lovely friend, for being so relaxed. And WONDERFUL to be around. You are a star.
